Dedication Ceremony: Highland Avenue, Sixth Street To Arroyo Chico Pedestrian And Bicycle Improvement Project And Miles School Community Park

On Saturday, September 8, 2007, the City of Tucson and Pima County will dedicate the Highland Avenue-Sixth Street to Arroyo Chico Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement Project and the Miles School Community Park, Phase I. The ceremony will take place at the Miles School Community Park ball field, 1400 E. Broadway, starting at 9 a.m.

Ward 5 Council Member Steve Leal, Assistant City Manager Karen Masbruch, Pima County District 2 Supervisor Ramón Valadez and Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry, will attend to commemorate the completion of these projects.

Joining the dignitaries at the dedication will be members of the Rincon Heights and Miles East-West neighborhood associations, who worked diligently to transform the park concept into reality.

The $530,000 Miles School Community Park Project included design and construction of a five-station fitness trail with lighting, lunch tables and drinking fountains. The ball field area received a backstop, player’s benches and bleachers and a new set of soccer goals. A long jump pit was constructed and trees have been planted throughout the playground. Three welcome signs, which include tile artwork, were installed in the park. Students under the direction of public artist Nina Borgia-Aberle created the welcome signs.

The $1.3 million Highland Avenue/Sixth Street to Arroyo Chico Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement Project, consisted of new sidewalks, driveways, curb access ramps, striping, speedtables, street lighting, landscaping and irrigation along Highland Avenue from Sixth Street to Arroyo Chico.

Media is invited to attend the event, which will include refreshments. The City of Tucson requests that those attending this event park in the Miles Exploratory Learning Center parking lot (South Highland and Broadway). Please do not block private driveways in the neighborhood. The Miles School Community Park is located directly behind the learning center.

For additional information concerning the Highland Avenue Improvement Project please contact Michael Graham, City of Tucson Department of Transportation Public Information Officer at 791-4371.

For additional information concerning the Miles School Community Park please contact Richard Symchak Public Information Officer City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department at 791-4873 ext. 108.
